  3. Matters Arising

    3.1 Permanent Address for NZIP
David Parry has made contact with Steve Thompson who wants to look into the matter of a permanent address for NZIP further. The Royal Society may not have the resources to support NZIP and other organisations that may want to do the same. This issue was put on hold.

3.2 Education Section Exchange with Australia
David Housden reported that AIP don’t seem to have an equivalent person to contact as NZIP. It was decided to ask AIP to contact teachers and if they don’t the matter will be dropped.

    3.3 Physics Career Resources
Geoff Austin advised that the careers pamphlet used years ago at Auckland
is no longer available on disk but there is a hard copy. It was suggested by
Dai Redshaw that a video presentation could be more effective in highlighting careers than written material as posters and brochures often end up in the rubbish.

The general consensus was that producing a video is a good idea if the price is not too exorbitant. The possibility of seeking sponsorship was also briefly discussed.

Action: Investigation to be made into the costs of production and potential sponsorship before the AGM in July next year.

    3.4 NCEA Physics
Trevor Castle reported that an article on NCEA Physics was included in the
NZIP newsletter and a letter on the difficulties of last year’s School Certificate Physics exam was written and sent to NZQA. David Housden advised that he is in the process of writing to David Parry to take up the issue of resourcing for NCEA with the Ministry. A general discussion took place on problems with NCEA. Members will be kept informed in the newsletter.

Action: David Parry agreed to receive the letter from David Housden and after consultation pass it on to the Ministry.

    3.5 Wellington Conference
Glen Mackie informed the meeting that the loss sustained at the NZIP Conference in Wellington was $2349.

  4. Financial

    4.1 Treasurer’s Report
Tony Signal reported the following on behalf of Bob O’Driscoll:

As all financial records are with the auditor, a current financial statement was not available for this meeting but will be available next week for the AGM. However the following is a record as at 30 April:

    Cheque account balance (approx)
    $10 000
    Term deposit balance (approx)
    35 000
    Expenditure (highlights)
    School prizes
    3 000
    Donation to Rutherford birthplace
    1 000
    GST payment
    750

    14 800
    Expenditure since 30 April
Royal Society (collection of subs, mail, etc)

Tim Armstrong moved that Graham Beardsley be appointed as Auditor for the current year. Seconded by Tony Signal.
    CARRIED

    4.2 Membership Fees 2003-2004 Recommendation
Tony Signal put forward the recommendation that all subscriptions be maintained at current levels. Seconded by Tim Armstrong.
    CARRIED

  5. Education Section

David Housden advised that production and sales of exams for schools has proceeded as usual, the website will be updated with links on the NZIP site, and a kit for beginning physics teachers has been released.

Tony Signal asked if there would be any changes to members of the Education Section Committee for the AGM. David Housden replied that the current members are happy to remain on the Committee.

  6. Accreditation of University Physics degrees

Information on the accreditation of physics degrees was circulated in the newsletter. The advantages of moving in-line with Australia were discussed in order that a recommendation could be made to the AGM next week.

It was decided not to proceed at this time but instead to delay for a few years to see how things evolve in Australia then to readdress the issue in 3-4 years’ time.

Action: David Parry to keep in touch with what’s happening in Australia on behalf of the NZIP.

  7. Companion Society of IoP

Tony Signal explained that the IoP plan to introduce a Companion Society with New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa where members of NZIP can have full privileges as a member of the IoP.

The motion was put forward that NZIP does wish to take up the opportunity to be included in the Companion Society of IoP.

    MOVED: Tim Armstrong/Tony Signal
    CARRIED

Tim Armstrong suggested that having a card to show proof of NZIP membership would be helpful especially when at conferences overseas.

Action: Executive to pursue the possibility of producing NZIP membership cards

  8. 2003 Conference and Physikos

The NZIP Conference will be held 9–11 July 2003. Geoff Barnes is handling the research side and Jennie McKelvie is handling the Physikos side. Work is still being done on the registration fees but these should be similar to last time with no significant change. A website will be created for registration and details of the conference.

Some keynote speakers have already been secured including Paul Hewitt, author of “Conceptual Physics”. Other speakers for the conference have also been arranged. Glen Mackie is to be invited as well as the President of the Australian Institute of Physics. Abstracts will be sought early next year as well.

A new executive will be elected at the conference. It is Auckland’s turn to take on the role for 2 years. Geoff Austin proposed that the task be shared with Massey University Albany Campus.

  9. General Business

David Parry reminded that the AGM will be held Friday 2 August, 4:00 pm at Massey University. He thanked Council members for their involvement over the last 12 months and expressed the desire to activate some of the branches. Council members were invited to seek out some activities that could be put together in their areas.

Action: Those who are unable to be present for the AGM should email their Branch reports to Tony Signal.

The meeting closed at 4:55 pm.
